Unpaid break calculator
Enter the shift and every unpaid break that was taken during it. The paid hours that are left come out in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.
A worked example
A long day from 07:00 to 17:30 with two unpaid breaks of 30 minutes each. Start to finish is 10 hours 30 minutes. Take off an hour of breaks and the paid time is 9 hours 30 minutes, or 9.5 hours.
How it is worked out
Paid time is finish − start − every unpaid break, with a day added to the finish when it is earlier than the start. It never goes below zero.
What this tool cannot tell you
- Which breaks are paid and which are unpaid
- Which breaks a person is entitled to, or when they must be taken
- Whether a break was actually taken
Questions
Does this tell me which breaks my staff are entitled to?
No. Break entitlements come from the award, agreement or contract that covers each person. This only takes the breaks you enter off the shift.
Can a shift have more than one unpaid break?
Yes. Add as many as were taken, and they all come off.
What if the breaks add up to more than the shift?
The paid hours stop at zero and the breaks are shown as longer than the shift, which usually means a typing slip.
