A worked example
Western Australia in 2027. Anzac Day falls on a Sunday, and Western Australia keeps 25 April and adds the Monday after. Easter Sunday is a public holiday there, and Easter Saturday is not.
| Date | Holiday |
|---|---|
| Mon 1 March | Labour Day |
| Fri 26 March | Good Friday |
| Sun 28 March | Easter Sunday |
| Mon 29 March | Easter Monday |
| Sun 25 April | Anzac Day |
| Mon 26 April | Anzac Day (additional) |
The King’s Birthday is on Western Australia’s list too, on 27 September, but it is proclaimed each year, so the calendar does not include it. Add it with a note if you open that day.
How it is worked out
Fixed dates, such as Christmas Day, are placed on the day. Holidays tied to a weekday, such as a Labour Day on the first Monday in October, are counted from the start of the month. Easter is worked out with the standard calculation for the Western church calendar, and Good Friday and Easter Monday are placed either side of it.
When a holiday falls on a weekend, each state’s own rule is followed where it was checked against a government list. Otherwise the calendar adds nothing it cannot be sure of, and says so.
What this tool cannot tell you
- It does not identify an award or say what anybody is paid for working, or not working, a public holiday.
- Days proclaimed each year, such as the King’s Birthday in Western Australia, are not included.
- Regional show days and part-day holidays, such as the evening of Christmas Eve in Queensland, are not included.
- A government can declare a one-off public holiday. Years ahead are worked out from today’s rules.
- Your notes stay in this page. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
Questions
Does it tell me what to pay on a public holiday?
No. Pay for working a public holiday is set by the award, agreement or contract that covers the employee. The calendar lists dates only.
Why is a holiday I expected missing?
Days proclaimed each year, such as the King’s Birthday in Western Australia, regional show days, and part-day holidays such as the evening of Christmas Eve in Queensland are not worked out. Add them from the government’s list.
Which state’s holidays apply to an employee?
Generally those of the state or territory where the employee is based for work. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains how that is worked out.
Are the dates official?
For 2027 in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and the ACT, the calendar matches every whole-day holiday on the government’s published list apart from days proclaimed each year. Other states and years are worked out from the rules, and should be checked against the government’s list.
