Where an employee is based for work

Public holidays generally follow the state or territory where an employee is based for work. That is not necessarily where the business is registered, or where one particular shift happens to be worked.

So somebody based at a venue in the Northern Territory generally keeps the Northern Territory’s public holidays. Where somebody’s base is not obvious, the Fair Work Ombudsman explains how it is worked out.

Read the Fair Work Ombudsman’s guidance on public holidays

Before a public holiday: the roster checklist

  • Mark the holidays on the calendar before you build any roster that includes them
  • Decide whether you open, and for what hours, before asking anybody to work
  • Treat a public holiday shift as a request the employee can answer, and keep a record of the answer
  • Look up what working the day is paid under the award or agreement, and enter that multiplier in your roster costing
  • Check minimum engagement and breaks under the award before you roster short holiday trading hours
  • Add the days a calendar may leave out: days proclaimed each year, regional show days and part-day holidays
  • Check which state each person is based in, if you roster people across a border

Public holidays in Roster Flow

Choose the Northern Territory in Roster Flow’s settings and its public holidays are in the roster’s calendar, with holiday shifts priced at the multiplier you enter. Any day can be taken off the list, and any day added.

Some days on the list are not worked out by Roster Flow, so add them yourself where they apply: Alice Springs Show Day (2 July), Tennant Creek Show Day (9 July), Katherine Show Day (16 July), Darwin Show Day (23 July), Borroloola Show Day (13 August), Christmas Eve (24 December), New Year's Eve (31 December).

Questions

How many public holidays are there in Northern Territory in 2027?

2027 has 14 statewide public holidays, and 2 part days, and 5 that apply only in part of the state in Northern Territory, from New Year's Day on Friday 1 January to Additional day for Boxing Day on Tuesday 28 December. The full list with dates is on this page.

Which 2027 public holidays are not the same everywhere in Northern Territory?

Christmas Eve on Friday 24 December is a part day, and New Year's Eve on Friday 31 December is a part day, and Alice Springs Show Day on Friday 2 July applies only in part of the state, and Tennant Creek Show Day on Friday 9 July applies only in part of the state, and Katherine Show Day on Friday 16 July applies only in part of the state, and Darwin Show Day on Friday 23 July applies only in part of the state, and Borroloola Show Day on Friday 13 August applies only in part of the state. Everything else on the list is statewide, so a roster built on the statewide dates alone can still be wrong for one venue.

What do I have to pay staff for a public holiday in Northern Territory?

This page does not say, because it depends on the award or agreement that covers the employee, and on whether they worked. Public holiday rates, and an employee's right to be absent on a public holiday, come from the Fair Work Act and the award. Roster Flow multiplies hours by a public holiday rate you enter yourself, and does not read an award.

Where do these Northern Territory dates come from?

NT Government: public and regional holidays, read on 18 September 2026. Dates move when a government proclaims them, so check the source before you publish a roster that depends on one.
