Cleaner job description template

A run of sites before the offices open: keys, alarms, bins, floors and a sheet signed at each one. Written for a contract cleaner working two sites in a morning.

This example wording was checked against the official sources on 22 September 2026. It is a starting point, not legal advice, and it has not been through a workplace relations professional.

Employment typePart time, 20 ordinary hours a week over five mornings
Where the work happensClient sites on the run, and the store room at the depot
Hours and rosterMonday to Friday from 5:30am, finishing by 9:30am. The run is set each week and the sites on it are named on the roster.
What the job involvesOpen the site with the keys or codes issued to you, and disarm and rearm the alarm. Empty bins and replace liners. Vacuum, mop and spot clean floors. Clean and restock bathrooms and kitchens. Wipe down desks, benches and touch points where the site asks for it. Use chemicals as the label and safety data sheet say, and keep the store room in order. Report damage, breakages and anything left unsafe. Sign the sheet at each site before you leave.
A typical shiftStart 5:30 at the first site: alarm off, bins, bathrooms, kitchen, floors, sheet signed, alarm on by 7:00. Travel to the second site, on site 7:15. Offices vacuumed and bathrooms restocked before staff arrive at 8:30, finishing the common areas by 9:15. Store room stocked for tomorrow, sheet signed, out by 9:30.
Skills and experienceHas cleaned commercial sites and can work unsupervised. Reliable on an early start. Careful with keys and alarm codes, and honest about anything broken or missed.
Tickets and certificatesA current driver licence where the run needs one. Any site inductions the client requires, arranged by the business.
Physical demandsEarly starts, being on your feet for the shift, bending and lifting, and working alone in an empty building.
Pay and awardPaid at the rate in your letter of engagement. Contract cleaning is usually covered by the Cleaning Services Award, and the award’s coverage clause decides whether it applies to this business. The classification decides the rate, and early morning work is paid as the award sets out.
How the job is reviewedA check in at three months on the run, the sign off sheets and the store room, then yearly.
Review date of this descriptionReviewed each March, or when a site joins or leaves the run.

What is in the file

  • Template, blank, with each section down the side and room for the answer.
  • Example, the same sheet filled in for Clearview Cleaning.
  • How to use, with the steps and the mistakes below.

How to fill it in

  1. Name the sites on the run and the order they are done in, because that is what the job is.
  2. Say who holds the keys and codes and what happens if one is lost.
  3. Check the duties against the classification definitions in the award before setting a rate.
  4. Note the travel between sites, and check how your award treats it.

Common mistakes

  • A description with no sites on it, which makes the shift impossible to plan
  • Leaving out the sign off sheet, which is the record the client relies on
  • Rostering a 5:30 start without checking what the award pays for early mornings
This is example wording for a small business to adapt, not legal advice. Coverage, classification, travel and the rate come from the award or agreement that applies. Chemical handling follows the label and the safety data sheet.

When a spreadsheet stops being enough

Roster Flow puts each site on the roster as its own venue, so a morning run reads as the sites it is, and a clock in at the wrong address is flagged for the supervisor.
