Retail assistant interview questions

Most of retail is quiet, and the interview should be about the fifteen minutes that are not: the return that is not quite right, the queue at four, the delivery that lands mid rush.

This example wording was checked against the official sources on 21 October 2026. It is a starting point, not legal advice, and it has not been through a workplace relations professional.

QuestionWhat to listen for
What sort of shop have you worked in, and how big was the team? The type of retail and the team size. A two person shop and a department store teach different habits.
How do you greet somebody who has just walked in and is browsing?Acknowledge, give them room, come back. Somebody who pounces has been trained badly, and somebody who ignores them has not been trained.
A customer wants to return something outside the policy. What do you do?Check the policy, explain it, offer what can be offered, and get the manager rather than inventing an exception.
How do you serve a queue and keep the floor tidy at the same time?Serve first, tidy in the gaps, and an eye on the door. Listen for somebody who knows which one comes first.
Tell us about a product you learned well enough to sell properly.A real product and real detail. The ability to learn a range matters more than already knowing yours.
What do you do when you do not know the answer to a customer’s question?Say so, find out, come back. Guessing is the answer that costs a return later.
A delivery arrives in the middle of a busy afternoon. What is your order of work?Customers first, stock somewhere safe, unpack when the floor allows. Anybody who unpacks through a queue is telling you something.
How do you handle a customer who is angry about something that is not your fault?Calm, listening, not taking it personally, and knowing when to hand it over.
What do you check before you open the till for a shift?A float count, and that the last person balanced. Anyone who has run a till will have a routine.
How do you make sure a shelf still looks right at the end of the day?A walk around at set times, faced up and refilled. Not only at close.
What would you do if you saw somebody shoplifting?Observe, tell a colleague or the manager, never confront. Anything heroic is the wrong answer.
This role is five days including Saturdays. Which days can you work?Specific days. Saturday is the shift this role exists for.
What would you want to learn in your first fortnight here?Something concrete about the range or the systems.
What would you like to ask us?Questions about the shop, the roster or the team.

What is in the file

  • Template, blank, with each section down the side and room for the answer.
  • Example, the same sheet filled in for Bridge Street Home.
  • How to use, with the steps and the mistakes below.

How to fill it in

  1. Read the retail assistant job description first, and cut any question the job does not actually need answered.
  2. Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order, so the answers can be compared rather than remembered.
  3. Print the blank sheet and write what each person said beside the question, during the interview rather than after it.
  4. Score at the end against the job description, not against who you liked talking to.

Common mistakes

  • Questions about age, health, pregnancy, family responsibilities, religion, race or union membership, which are not about the job and carry real risk
  • A different set of questions for each candidate, which makes the decision impossible to explain later
  • Asking about availability and then rostering outside it in the first fortnight
This is an example question set for a small business to adapt, not legal advice. It is unlawful to discriminate against a person in recruitment because of a protected attribute, including age, disability, race, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status, family or carer’s responsibilities, religion, political opinion, national extraction or social origin. Ask only about the person’s ability to do the job, and ask every candidate the same questions.

When a spreadsheet stops being enough

In Roster Flow the Saturday the interview asked about is rotated across the team rather than settling on the newest person, and each person can see the pattern ahead.
