What is in the file
- Template, blank, with 20 rows under name, day, first part start and the rest.
- Example, the same sheet filled in for Marlow Street Bistro.
- How to use, with the steps and the mistakes below.
The hours column is a formula, not a number typed in. It takes the finish from the start, counts a shift that runs past midnight correctly, and takes off the unpaid break.
How to fill it in
- Put the lunch part and the dinner part of each shift in their own columns.
- Leave the second part empty for a straight shift, and the paid hours still work out.
- Look at the gap: one too short to go anywhere is not much of a break.
- Check the award or agreement for any rules on split shifts, the length of the gap, or an allowance.
Common mistakes
- Counting the gap between the two parts as paid time
- A split that finishes late followed by an early start the next day
- Missing an allowance the award attaches to split shifts
When a spreadsheet stops being enough
In Roster Flow somebody can work two shifts in a day, and staff can give availability as windows, so a split can be rostered and offered properly.
Questions
What is on the split shift roster template?

Does the split shift roster template work out the hours?
Yes. Paid hours is a formula, not a number typed in: it takes the finish from the start, counts a shift that runs past midnight correctly, and takes the unpaid break off. Type a start and a finish and the paid hours follow.
