Free shift handover template

What one shift has to pass to the next, written down rather than remembered: what is done, what is not, what went wrong, and who is following it up.

What is in the file

  • Template, blank, with 16 rows under time, area, what happened or needs doing and the rest.
  • Example, the same sheet filled in for The Railway Hotel.
  • How to use, with the steps and the mistakes below.

How to fill it in

  1. Write each item when it happens, not at the end of the shift.
  2. Say what state it is in: done, open or recorded.
  3. Name the person following it up, so an open item has an owner.
  4. Read the last handover before starting, and sign it off.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the handover from memory at close
  • An open item with nobody named against it
  • An incident recorded only in the handover, not on the form it needs
A handover is not an incident report. Anything involving an injury or a safety risk also goes wherever your business records incidents.

When a spreadsheet stops being enough

Roster Flow keeps the roster, the clock ins and every change to hours with who made it and why. Handover notes stay in whatever your venue uses for them.

Questions

What is on the shift handover template?

5 columns: time, area, what happened or needs doing, status, and 1 more. The blank sheet gives you 16 rows, and the example is the same grid filled in for The Railway Hotel: what the next shift needs to know, written down in one place.

Does the shift handover template calculate anything?

No. Its 5 columns are there to fill in, by hand or on screen, and none of them is a formula. It is a planning sheet for what the next shift needs to know, written down in one place

Can I use the shift handover template in Google Sheets?

Yes. Open shift-handover.xlsx from Google Drive, or use File, then Import, then Upload with shift-handover.csv. The grid and its example come across either way.

Do I need an account to download the shift handover template?

No. shift-handover.xlsx, shift-handover.csv and shift-handover.pdf are plain links. There is no sign up, no email address asked for, and nothing to install.
